Hi everyone, had my appt at the rheumy today. Went through all the symptoms again, and he asked how I felt the meds were doing. I said to be honest not very well, as still have pain and swelling. He did an examination of hands wrists knees neck etc. He did the tender points test and diagnosed fibromyalgia, as he said the symptoms are not all RA related. I showed him the photos of swollen hands with the rashes on them and neck and face etc and he said that unless he sees the actual rashes he can commit as the ANA was negative. He asked about the dry eyes and mouth, and mouth ulcers, hair loss etc, and said he feels there is an overlap and we will keep an eye on it. He had added sulphasalazine to the mix of mtx and plaquenil. Have to see the nurse on 20 May to check how the sulpha is gong, and have another appt at clinic in July. I did feel he listened to what I said, and that he is willing to re look at the meds, he said if they dont seem to be working then we need to rethink. He also said if the amtitriptyline isnt working he could change that, but to give it another two months. He also said I have to come off the pred, am currently on 15mg and he watns to reduce it 2 weekly starting at 12.5mg until I can come off totally. This is my main worry, as I am worried that I wont be able to carry on working without it. Well, thats about it, hope everyone is doing ok, take care x BARBARA

Hi Barbara,
I hope you get somewhere with the meds. It is very frightening when something works and they want to change it. Try to be positive and keep a diary to remind you of how you feel on the sulfasalazine. I truly hope they do you some good and make a difference to your pain. When I was on that combo it took about 3 months before it made a noticeable difference. My Rheumatologist is really lovely and very approachable, I wish everyone had someone as nice as her. Thinking about you Lorna xx

Hi Barbara All seems a bit of a mess for you at the moment but your rheumatologist seems sympathetic and has a positive approach which always helps. I understand your concerns with the prednisolone; I had a similar cutting down exercise but I had to do it much slower than 2 weekly when I got down to 10mg. Everyone's different though and you might sail through. I then got stuck at 3mg and can't get any lower been trying for a couple of years at least!! Even a reduction of 0.5mg seems to cause a flare so I'm stuck with it for now! Just be sure to reduce really really slowly Take care, Lyn x

Hi Barbara,
Glad you got to see the consultant and he sounds to have been quite thorough. I hope the sulphasalazine added to what you are taking works well for you. If not, he will maybe think about anti-tnfs. Good luck with cutting down the prednisone, I know it's not easy.
Love, Doreen xx

Dear Barbara,
Try not to worry too much- the combination is very popular and has excellent results, and the rheumy is correct, it is far safer for you (in the long run) to be off the oral steroids. The SLZ will take a few weeks to get into your system but you're lowering the steroids very slowly so it may just be the right timing, when one will take over from the other?
Hope you're not feeling too down...it is very hard I know.
Much love always to you,
Amanda

Hi Barbara - I'm glad you felt that the doc listened to you. I had sulphasalazine added to my drug cocktail last year and felt some improvement within a couple of weeks. Unfortunately my tricky stomach couldn't tolerate them. I hope it starts to work for you quickly to help your attempt to wean off the steroids. Take care.

Thanks for replies everyone. Keeping a diary re the sulpha sounds like a good idea. Still feeling a bit shell shocked, wasnt what I expected (the fibro) but will cope, always have before. I am hoping the sulpha will work, especially as coming off the pred. He didnt mention what the next step is, but like Doreen said, probably be the anti-tnf, not sure how I feel about that either. No point worrying now though, as hopefully the sulpha will kick in. BARBARA

Hi Barb
Firstly I'm so very sorry you are having yet more problems and I'm not surprised you are upset by the diagnosis of fibro.
Thank goodness you have a very suppotive rheummy who listens to you and will change your meds if and when needed.
You are always so positive in spite of all the problems you have and are an example to us.
Take care
Love Jeanxxxxx

Hi Chrissie and Jean, Chfrissie you are amazing!! how do you keep so mobile/ I struggle with mobility every day. You are always so positvie and just get on with it. Jean, thankyou for what you said, I just try to keep going, I enjoy working with the babies, and maybe one day I wont be able to, but for now being positive keeps me going and just makes me more determined to work and to get out as much as possible. Went shopping with my daughter today, you know what teenages are, always "need" something! Feeling tired now though, swollen feet and ankles and hands. Will take it easy tomorrow. Love to all x BARBARA

I wouldn't feel too down about it all, the increased meds should help, given time. I'm trying to cut down on pred, down to 4mg, 4mg, 3mg over the 3 days. It's a slow job, but I think I'll get there in the end.
Regarding the future, you may find that once you find the drugs that suit you, you may be able to carry on working. I'm feeling a lot better since I went on to Enbrel, although I still get very tired, so have to pace myself.
Stay positive!
Lyn

Well, Barbara, i think you deserve a medal for teenage shopping!
Yesterday I went for the first time in FOUR years girl shopping- I know cruel Mam, I buy all Marie's clothes from the inernet.....
Never again, I say! I was absolutely horrified with all the 'night time clothes' as I call it on here to be polite...she is a tall gorgeous 12year old and some of the clothes for her age and above (she is about size 14 because of height) are atrocious!!!!
In the end I compromised on these grey jean things which look like leggings...oh my goodness I will regret this. And we found a size 8 ladies skirt which is lovely...
It shattered me too, I don't know how you manage doing it! It is far far more tiring than home schooling five children on a bad day!
I was sick too in a shop, thankfully Marie found the toilets....just in time! Joy!!
Love,
Amanda

Amanda, glad you survived the shopping trip!! I know what you mean about the clothes, some of them are unbelievable now. The legings (or jeggings) depending if they are the jean type or soft type (I have been educated on this!) are great, just wear with a longish top and so comfortable too, Georgia loves them. I do always come back exhausted, but dont want to say no, as she cant always get friends to come due to the revising they have to do at present. I usually have a rest (sleep) for a couple of hours, then its not so bad. Have a busy week this week, two little ones every day, so will be having early nights. Hope you are doing ok, re the sickness, must have been awful to feel ill when in the shops. At least that the trip over with for a while. Its easier with boys, not so much choice and no unsuitablke clothing either!! Take care x BARBARA
